Axolotl

The Axolotl or Mexican Salamander is an amphibian that never develops lungs or takes to land. It has the extraordinary ability to regrow entire limbs and vital organs. The species originates in several lakes underlying Mexico City, but was decimated by pollution and fishing. In 1998, Lake Xochimilco held 6,000 axolotls per square kilometers; by 2013 none could be found the wild. It only survives in captivity.
